Frequently asked questions
Trial, cancellation, AI, ATS compatibility, support: our straight answers to the questions we get asked the most.
The trial is advertised at a low price. Is that really all I'll pay?
No. The trial price covers 7 days of full access. If you don't cancel before those 7 days are up, your subscription renews automatically every 4 weeks (or you can switch to the annual plan).
You can cancel at any time from your account, in just a few clicks, without having to call anyone. For more details, see our pricing page.
Can I be charged after cancelling?
Cancelling after the renewal date doesn't stop a charge that has already gone through; only the next renewal is stopped. It's stated in the terms shown at checkout, but we know that's not always what sticks when you tick a box in a hurry.
Our practical advice: cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date shown in your account (or via this link), and keep the confirmation email. If you're charged after cancelling in time, support handles billing complaints as a priority, so don't let it slide.
Won't the AI-suggested content sound like a CV written by 200,000 other candidates?
That's the risk with any tool that offers ready-made wording, and it's real if you just click “accept” without changing anything. MakeMyCV's AI suggests starting sentences (phrasing approved by recruiters, not randomly generated text), but it works from your job titles, responsibilities and results: two people in the same job get different suggestions.
The part that makes you stand out (your numbers, your projects, your concrete achievements) is the part you type yourself. We recommend always rewriting at least one sentence per role in your own words: that's what makes the difference between “a generated CV” and “your CV”..
“ATS-optimised”: can you actually check that, or is it the marketing claim everyone uses?
You're right to be sceptical: almost every CV builder on the market uses that label. What we can tell you specifically about our 8 templates is that they follow a clean single-column structure, with no text hidden in graphic areas and no nested tables. That's what avoids the classic traps that cause applicant tracking software (ATS) to skip entire lines of your CV.
What no tool can guarantee, ours included: that every ATS used by every company will read the file 100%. That's why the built-in ATS CV checker gives you a section-by-section report rather than a simple “approved” badge, so you can see what's really at stake.
Why ask for my date of birth or gender? In many countries, that has no place on a CV.
These fields exist because MakeMyCV serves markets where some recruiters still ask for them. In many countries, including them on a CV is discouraged, and can even be risky under anti-discrimination principles in hiring. That's why these fields are optional: you can leave them blank and they won't appear on the final document.
If a field seems mandatory with no way to skip it, that's a bug to report to support, not something you just have to live with. Several reports along these lines have already been passed on to the product team.
The Apple, Amazon and Tesla logos on the homepage… are you really partners with these companies?
No, and it says so in black and white, in small print just below the logos: “Unless otherwise noted, these references in no way aim to suggest an affiliation or association with Makemycv.” The text above them means exactly what it says: “Our users have been hired by”.. In other words, people who used MakeMyCV went on to land jobs at these companies, not that these companies recommend us.
We'd rather be upfront about it than have you find out by googling “MakeMyCV Apple partnership” and coming up empty.
Canva and Word are free, so why would I pay to make a CV?
If you already know what to write and how to structure your experience, and formatting doesn't scare you, Canva or Word will do the job just fine. That's not where MakeMyCV adds value.
What the subscription covers is the time it takes you without guidance: finding the right wording, structuring your CV for an ATS, generating a matching cover letter, checking your CV before you send it, and unlimited editing and exporting to PDF and Word for as long as your job search lasts. It's a subscription dedicated to your job search, not just a layout editor. It's up to you to decide whether that's what you need this month.
How much can I customise the template?
Across our 8 templates, you can change the colours, fonts and section order, and add or remove blocks (languages, projects, certifications...). What you can't do is break the grid (move a block anywhere you like on the page, as you would in free-form layout software).
That's deliberate: a 100% free-form layout is also what makes a CV unreadable for an ATS. If total layout freedom matters more to you than machine readability, a general-purpose design tool will suit you better than MakeMyCV.
If I have a billing problem or a bug, can I talk to someone?
Of the negative reviews posted over the last 12 months, the team replied publicly to the vast majority, including 1-star reviews, with detailed answers rather than a copy-pasted template. That's no guarantee your specific case will be resolved to your satisfaction, but it's a sign that silence isn't the default policy.
The fastest channel is still support from your account, or emailing support@makemycv.com, rather than social media: payment-related complaints are handled there as a priority.
